Sixers fire Daryl Morey as president of basketball operations
The Sixers have fired president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, according to ESPN‘s Shams Charania:
While the Sixers did upset the Boston Celtics in a thrilling seven-game series to open the postseason, they were swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Sixers also seemingly have very little roster flexibility this offseason with Joel Embiid and Paul George both guaranteed at least two more seasons on their contracts.
Interestingly, Charania says that Nick Nurse — who has a 116-130 record in three seasons as the head coach of the Sixers — will remain on the job. It stands to reason, though, that he’ll be on the clock next year since the next lead executive won’t have hired him.
As for who the next president of basketball operations will be, Bob Myers — who built the Golden State Warriors teams that won four titles and is the current president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment — “will be tasked to lead the search for the new head executive for the 76ers and he will oversee the franchise’s basketball department in the interim,” per Charania.
The fact that Myers, 51, is leading the search would seem to indicate that he himself won’t prove to be a candidate. Obviously if he was interested, though, Myers would be the most qualified person to succeed Morey.
