The Phillies will have to wait at least another day to clinch their second consecutive NL East title, but they are headed to the playoffs for the fourth year in a row.
By virtue of the San Francisco Giants losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-2 Sunday, the Phillies have punched their ticket to the postseason.
It's now just a matter of when they'll clinch the NL East. The Phillies magic number to do that remains at one, meaning the next time they win or the Mets lose, it will wrap up the division.
This is just the second time in franchise history that the Phillies have reached the postseason four years in a row. Granted, there are more playoff spots now than there have ever been. But 2007-2011 was the only previous time that the Phillies made the playoffs four or more years in a row, and that's considered the golden era of the franchise, which began play in 1883.
Of course, the only thing missing from the 2022-present Phillies to also be considered a golden era is a World Series. Even with a playoff spot now locked up and the NL East fait accompli, the Phillies still have playoff positioning to play for over the final two weeks, which will go a long way in determining how October plays out.
