The definitive ranking of every bobblehead in Phillies history

Bobbleheads of Larry Bowa, Ryan Howard, Trea Turner and Dick Allen are among those ranked on this list.

  • Phillies

The Phillies first did a bobblehead/bobble figurine/bobbing head doll giveaway on May 20, 2001 at Veterans Stadium.

Since then, the Phillies have generally done two bobbleheads per season. Thanks to Bullpen Bobbles, we've been able to go back and review each one.

BUY PHILLIES TICKETS

On Pattison has ranked every bobblehead given away to fans at Veterans Stadium/Citizens Bank Park in Phillies history from worst to first. (We're not counting speciality bobbleheads that you can get with Theme Night tickets or at various stores inside the stadium. So sorry if you came to this story looking to see where the Scooby-Doo Phillies bobblehead would check in at.) (Image credit: Bullpen Bobbles)43: Steve Carlton

Giveaway Date: June 22, 2003

Bro, what? Why does it look like Steve Carlton ate a fluffernutter sandwich seconds before taking the mound? Why isn't their a "P" on the front of the jersey?

(Bullpen Bobbles)42: Pat Burrell

Giveaway Date: May 20, 2001

This was the first bobblehead in Phillies history, and frankly, fans are lucky it wasn't the last. This "Pat Burrell" bobblehead looks like you went to a local bakery and asked them to put a generic Phillies player as a cake topper.

41: Cole Hamels

Giveaway Date: Aug. 21, 2013

A recurring theme on this list is going to be that no designer could ever seem to perfect a Cole Hamels bobblehead. This one looks like when SportsRadio 94 WIP's Joe DeCamara wears his full Phillies uniform.

(Bullpen Bobbles)40: Roy Oswalt

Giveaway Date: May 24, 2011

This does look somewhat like Roy Oswalt, so perhaps it's unfair to have it this low. But something just seems off about it. If there was ever a bobblehead where you were going to have a pitcher actually throwing the ball, this should have been it, right?

Roy Oswalt had a long stride in his delivery. (Dale Zanine/Imagn Images) ---

(Bullpen Bobbles)39: Phillie Phanatic

Giveaway Date: May 5, 2002

Not only does this one look like it belongs on a cake, but the Phanatic's body looks like it was created out of icing. However, it is interesting to note that in 2002, the penultimate year at Veterans Stadium, this bobblehead was sponsored by ... Citizens Bank.

(Bullpen Bobbles)38: Chase Utley

Giveaway Date: Aug. 20, 2008

This bobblehead serves as a reminder that the Phillies used their regular red batting helmets with their cream alternate uniforms in 2008, the first year of the popular threads. Fortunately, they corrected that in 2009 by getting a batting helmet that matches the blue caps with a red brim that go with these uniforms.

(Bullpen Bobbles)37: Chase Utley

Giveaway Date: May 26, 2006

This does look like Chase Utley's batting stance, but it's hard to overlook how the brim of the batting helmet appears to be flipped up.

(Bullpen Bobbles)36: Cole Hamels

Giveaway Date: July 25, 2007

The designer of this bobblehead was clearly told to highlight Cole Hamels' good looks. The result was a face that looks like handsome Squidward.

(Bullpen bobbles)

35: Hunter Pence

Giveaway Date: Aug. 21, 2012

There's something to be said for how this bobblehead highlighted the quirkiness of Hunter Pence as a player. But between the obnoxiously large chin and a brim that would make Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez tell you to throw your hat in the fire, this one was a dud.

(Bullpen bobbles)34: Ryan Howard

Giveaway Date: Aug. 19, 2014

This maybe looks somewhat like Ryan Howard, but there's just not a lot redeeming about the bobblehead. Specifically, the pinstripes look like they were created by a printer running out of ink.

(Bullpen Bobbles)33: Charlie Manuel

Giveaway Date: April 28, 2009

The idea of a Charlie Manuel bobblehead that captures him screaming "This is for Philadelphia!" after the Phillies won the 2008 World Series is a good one. But the face here — which could have been used for any manager in his 60s — ruins it.

(Bullpen Bobbles)32: Maikel Franco

Giveaway Date: June 18, 2016

No disrespect to Maikel Franco, but the quality of this bobblehead is fitting for the 2016 Phillies. We're going to assume that not all of the Franco bobbleheads had such poor paint jobs. And perhaps the bat isn't all the way screwed in, and that's what make this look like he's hitting the ball into the ground.

(Bullpen Bobbles)31: Phil and Phillis

Giveaway Date: Sept. 27, 2003

This is a fine depiction of Phil and Phillis, the mascots that the franchise used prior to the Phanatic. The problem is Phil and Phillis were creepy to most kids. Fortunately, they can't haunt you anymore, unless you visit Storybook Land

A side note, was one corporate sponsor not enough for this bobblehead?

(Bullpen Bobbles)30: Jimmy Rollins

Giveaway Date: June 23, 2002

This is the second bobblehead of an active player that the Phillies ever gave out. But it made Jimmy Rollins look like he was contemplating his existence, which was probably a reasonable thing to do when you were playing 81 games a season at Veterans Stadium.

BUY PHILLIES GEAR

(Bullpen Bobbles)29: Brad Lidge

Giveaway Date: Aug. 19, 2009

This is the first of two Brad Lidge bobbleheads on this list. This one did a better job with his facial hair, but is kind of unremarkable considering Lidge was coming off of closing out a World Series the prior year. Also, by the time it was given out in August of 2009, Lidge was well into one of the worst seasons a closer has ever had.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

28: Jamie Moyer

Giveaway Date: April 30, 2008

This was a pretty good Jamie Moyer bobblehead, which pays homage to him starting Game 162 in 2007, where the Phillies clinched their first division title since 1993. There's nothing spectacular about it, but it's solid.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

27: Ryan Howard

Giveaway Date: July 14, 2019

We all know the moment that this bobblehead is inspired by, as Ryan Howard pointed to the crowd after hitting the 58th and final home run of his NL MVP season on Sept. 22, 2006. But what in the world is going on with these alien eyes?

(Bullpen bobbles)

26: Carlos Ruiz

Giveaway Date: Aug. 24, 2010

Carlos Ruiz's gear looks really cool on this, and it's one of the rare road gray bobbleheads. The problem is it doesn't really look like "Chooch."

25: Aaron Nola

Giveaway Date: Aug. 18, 2019

This is mostly a good bobblehead, which really looks like Nola — both in the face and with how he contorts his body when pitching. But the coloring on the cream uniforms has a yellow tint, so we docked it a bit because of that.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

23: Chase Utley

Giveaway Date: June 10, 2014

99% of this bobblehead is great. The problem is that while Utley probably was wearing red sunglasses in the picture that this bobblehead was modeled after, it didn't translate well to the figurine. The sunglasses make Utley look like he's getting ready to watch a solar eclipse, not tag out a would-be basestealer.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

22: Ryan Howard

Giveaway Date: July 26, 2006

The face of this one doesn't necessarily look like Ryan Howard, nor does his helmet look very good. But it deserves some credit for its attention to detail on his batting stance. It got everything right, down to Howard doing a bit of a head tilt as he pointed his bat at the opposing pitcher.

(Bullpen bobbles)

21: Roy Halladay

Giveaway Date: May 18, 2010

This is a cool bobblehead in the sense that the body looks exactly like Halladay did when throwing a pitch. It's not cool in the sense that his neck is a full inch long.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

20: Placido Polanco

Giveaway Date: Aug. 16, 2011

The Phillies don't use matte helmets with their cream alternate uniforms, but this bobblehead makes you wonder if they should because the less glossy helmet on Placido Polanco looks pretty good. What doesn't look good is the giraffe neck that was popular on all bobbleheads in the early 2010s.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

19: Zack Wheeler

Giveaway Date: May 16, 2025

This is a really good bobblehead because even though Wheeler is in a pitching stance, he's facing forward, so you can see the name plate and his face from the same angle. It's also the first Phillies bobblehead to feature the IBX jersey ad patch

A small number of fans at this game received an alternate bobblehead, which featured Wheeler wearing a City Connect jersey

(Bullpen bobbles)

18: Roy Halladay

Giveaway Date: Aug. 8, 2014

This is clearly based on the tip of his cap that Halladay did to the fans at Citizens Bank Park after his no-hitter in Game 1 of the 2010 NLDS. It got that part down, but the head is off center from his neck, and the face kind of just looks like a generic guy with red hair.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

17: Cliff Lee

Giveaway Date: June 4, 2012

It's a bit surprising for as popular as Cliff Lee was at his peak that there was only one bobblehead of him. Getting his leg kick would have been better, but the Phiten necklace really makes it feel of its era.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

16: Chase Utley

Giveaway Date: June 21, 2019

While we're partial to bobbleheads of players, well, playing, this one gets a special exception. It looks exactly like Chase Utley at his 2008 World Series parade speech. The only thing it's missing is a button you can hit to hear his iconic three-word message.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

15: Bryce Harper

Giveaway Date: June 10, 2022

Bryce Harper has said that the cream alternates are his favorite Phillies uniforms, and they look great on this bobblehead. Another aesthetic note here is that this is the first Phillies bobblehead to ever have C-flap batting helmet.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

14: Randy Wolf

Giveaway Date: Aug. 17, 2004

Whoever made this bobblehead got Randy Wolf's goatee perfect. Also, because this was the first bobblehead given out at Citizens Bank Park, it's cool that the backdrop of the stadium is behind the figurine.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

13: Trea Turner

Giveaway Date: July 26, 2024

It's rare that the Phillies do bobbleheads in their road gray uniforms — this was the first since the aforementioned Chase Utley one in 2014 — so this one is unique in that sense. It also very much resembles the follow-through on Turner's swing after he's hit a home run.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

12: Brad Lidge

Giveaway Date: Aug. 5, 2018

Even if they could have done a better job with Lidge's facial hair, every other part of this bobblehead commemorating him closing out the 2008 World Series is extremely accurate.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

11: Mike Lieberthal

Giveaway Date: Aug. 29, 2004

It would be hard to have depicted Mike Lieberthal's smile any better. The catcher's mask on the side is probably the best part.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

10: Phillie Phanatic

Giveaway Date: April 29, 2007

This might not be the most realistic one, but the cartoonish element really works here as it was intended to celebrate the Phillie Phanatic's birthday. This was only given out to kids 15 and under, so there were likely some upset adults that day.

(Bullpen bobbles)

9: Bryson Stott

Giveaway Date: May 17, 2024

This one looks quite a bit like Stott, and as far as we can tell, this is the first powder blue bobble head of an active player given away at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies started wearing their powder blue throwbacks as a Thursday home alternate in 2018

8. Steve Carlton

Giveaway Date: June 22, 2003

Whether this makes up for the original Steve Carlton bobblehead or not is debatable, but it's a much more fitting tribute to "Lefty" from the final season at Veterans Stadium.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

7. Ryan Howard

Giveaway Date: May 16, 2007

There's been a ton of Ryan Howard bobbleheads, but this one perfectly captures the follow-through that Howard had after hitting a home run.

(Bullpen bobbles)

6. Larry Bowa

Giveaway Date: Aug. 18, 2015

This isn't even the highest-rated Larry Bowa bobblehead on this list, but it's a pretty awesome one. The attention to detail with the cap under the batting helmet is the best part.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

5. Mike Schmidt

Giveaway Date: June 23, 2003

One of the problems with some bobbleheads is that the player's name is at a different part than their face. This almost looks like Schmidt is pausing mid at-bat to smile for a picture, so it's easy to display. Plus, it looks strikingly like Schmidt.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

4. Larry Bowa

Giveaway Date: Sept. 27, 2001

I will acknowledge I'm particularly partial to this bobblehead because I got it as a kid and took it into show-and-tell in Kindergarten.

But this is a cool bobblehead because it strikes the right balance between looking realistic and having a cartoonish element. It also kind of bridged eras because this bobblehead is Bowa as a player, but it was given out when he was managing the team.

(Ryan Lawrence)

3. Mike Schmidt

Giveaway Date: July 8, 2017

This bobblehead — which shows Schmidt trotting out of the batter's box after clubbing his 500th career home run — is one of the better ones that the Phillies have ever done.

(Bullpen bobbles)

2. Dick Allen

Giveaway Date: June 9, 2023

Dick Allen is probably the coolest player to ever suit up with the Phillies, which made this bobblehead hard to mess up. Still, everything from the stirrups to his glasses looks perfect. The 1950-1969 Phillies threads might also be the best in franchise history.

A fun fact is that some fans in attendance for this game got a different version of the bobblehead that has Allen wearing powder blue. Those were the road uniforms worn in Allen's second stint with the Phillies from 1975-1976.

(Bullpen Bobbles)

1. Harry and Whitey

Giveaway Date: Aug. 18, 2002

This is a timeless bobblehead that includes Harry Kalas and Richie "Whitey" Ashburn, the most popular broadcasting duo in Phillies history. It would be great to see a sequel with Tom McCarthy and John Kruk, or Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen.
