J.J. Abrams fans are eagerly awaiting ‘Duster’

Abrams co-created “Duster” with LaToya Morgan, and Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson led the series. It was greenlit in 2020 and will finally premiere on Max five years later.

“Duster” is a “1970s drama [that] follows a getaway driver and a young FBI agent as they take on a notorious crime syndicate.” The series also features a reunion between Abrams and Holloway, who both previously worked on the massively popular TV series, Lost.

With this reunion and Abrams' impressive filmography, fans and critics are excited to see if Abrams is returning to television with a new hit.

As of May 12, 2025, fans are forecasting a score around 84%. TV fans can buy a share for 84 cents if they believe the chances should be higher, and for 16% if they believe it should be lower.

J.J. Abrams' past Rotten Tomatoes critical reception

In the last decade, Abrams has focused mostly on films. The last series he wrote and created was Fringe. Let’s take a look at his past shows and how they were critically received.

TV Series

Rotten Tomatoes Score

Fringe (2008-2013)

90

Undercovers (2010-2012)

39

Lost (2004-2010)

86

Alias (2001-2006)

86

Felicity (1998-2002)

91

Abrams is prolific, but he isn’t perfect. He’s occasionally created, written, directed, or produced weak series and movies.

Four of the five series he created and wrote before Duster have performed well. However, Undercovers was critically panned and was cancelled after only one season.

While his record is fairly strong, it isn’t flawless, which indicates that some caution should be exercised when approaching Duster's Rotten Tomatoes score.

Halloway’s last starring role in a TV series, Colony, was well received with a 92% rating. For Hilson, her previous TV role was in Love, Victor, which also received a 92% score. In terms of the main co-leads, these two have strong projects in their past.

Early reaction for ‘Duster’

Early reviews and reactions for Duster have been positive. After seven reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the score is 86%. With four reviews, the Metacritic score is a strong 77 right now.

According to social media, the critics liked the series overall, complimenting the action within the series and the acting of the two leads. Collider called the series “dynamite,” and The Daily Beast says Duster gives Halloway “the stylish return he deserves.”  But other critics questioned the series’ tone and overall plot.

Abrams' reunion with Holloway in Duster shows strong early promise with an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score, making it an attractive prediction market opportunity on Kalshi for television fans.
