John Kruk will remain Tom McCarthy's right-hand man on Phillies broadcasts for the foreseeable future.
Deep in an excellent profile of Kruk done by Jake Kring-Schreifels of Philadelphia Magazine, it was revealed that the three-time All-Star first baseman signed a new contract with NBC Sports Philadelphia this offseason:
How long does he want to keep doing this? If it’s any indication, Kruk, now 64, signed a four-year contract with NBC Sports Philadelphia over the winter. In fact, he recently told Harper that he hopes to stay in the booth until the slugger’s 13-year contract ends. “He said, ‘Well, I’d like to get an extension,’” Kruk laughs.
For what it's worth, 2025 is the seventh season of Bryce Harper's 13-year/$330 million contract with the Phillies. Harper and his agent, Scott Boras, have talked on multiple occasions about wanting to extend his current deal, which runs through the 2031 season.
In all likelihood, Kruk's broadcasting future isn't going to be directly tied to how long Harper plays with the Phillies. But you do get the sense from the tremendous profile of Kruk — which is absolutely worth your time — that he's enjoyed the job significantly more since Harper joined the team in 2019 than he did from 2017-2018. It makes sense, when you have to watch all nine innings of the game no matter what, the job is going to be a lot more fun when the team you're announcing for has good players.
In any event, you can count on Kruk being in the booth with McCarthy for at least the next four seasons, with Ruben Amaro Jr. and Ben Davis also serving as color commentators for the games that the hilarious former first baseman isn't scheduled.
This year, you'll be able to watch Kruk call games in market with a Peacock add-on or with an MLB.TV subscription. There will no doubt be a moment early in the season where McCarthy has to explain to a confused Kruk how both work.
