The Super Bowl LIX champion Eagles accepted an invitation to visit the White House, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Monday ($).

After the Eagles won Super Bowl LII in 2018, the White House extended and then rescinded an invitation to the team. ESPN reported at the time that "five or fewer Eagles players" committed to attend the ceremony, leading President Trump to issue the following statement on the social media platform then known as twitter:

It seems things will go differently this time around. "We sent the invite, and they enthusiastically accepted," a White House official told the Inquirer. "We are working with them to determine a date and logistics."

Rumors that the Eagles would again decline any invite from President Trump circulated in February based on a report from the U.S. Sun, an offshoot of a British tabloid. The Sun reported that "a well-placed insider" said that "recent discussions between the players and the Eagles front office resulted in a 'massive no' when asked if they would accept an invitation to the nation's capital."

The Sun also cited an anonymous current "Eagles star" as making the following statement:

"We represent a city and a state that is pushing for equal rights, respect, and values that respect every human being. We won’t forget what happened and the criticism we received for taking a stand against racism, and we won’t back down from our values of respect, integrity, and equality."

The tabloid's report was met with thoughtful, nuanced criticism of the team's decision.

We're just kidding. The internet went apeshit:

It is unclear whether Ms. Kelly, Mr. Cowboy, Spitfire, the ironically-pseudonymed Mr. Eagleman, or Ms. Girl are now Eagles fans.

Since the Super Bowl, NFL players Harrison Butker and Kirk Cousins have separately met with the President.

Butker and Cousins are not members of the Philadelphia Eagles, who dismantled and embarrassed the Kansas City Chiefs on February 9.

UPDATE: On Tuesday afternoon, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that the Eagles' visit will take place on April 28.
