ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday that the Eagles are releasing star cornerback Darius Slay.

Schefter later added that Slay would be designated a post-June 1 release, saving the Birds $4.3 million of salary cap space.
The move was widely expected by NFL observers. Slay, 34, was entering the final year of a three-year, $42 million deal. With wildly successful young defensive backs like Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell in the fold and the Eagles searching for cap flexibility, the six-time Pro Bowler's contract was a likely target.

There's a chance that the Eagles will try to bring Slay back at a lower price.
"I've got one more left [on my contract], but you know how that works," Slay said in February on the St. Brown podcast. "Whatever they want to do, I might re-sign back, hopefully. If I ain't, we'll see what I'm doing because I do want to play one more year, for sure."
Podcast host and Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown then floated the idea of a possible reunion with the Lions. Detroit drafted Slay 36th overall in 2013, and he played there through 2019 before joining the Birds.
"If it is, it is. If it ain't, it ain't," responded Slay. "For sure, the two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit. The main two, the main ones I'd love to be at."
