Acquiring a pass rusher as talented as 29-year-old Myles Garrett, the first pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate, seems ambitious even for known miracle worker Howie Roseman. But rumors about the possibility aren't going away.
Cannot tell you how many people in Indy believe the Eagles will be the team to land Myles Garrett.
Garrett requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns earlier this month, citing a desire to win. On Tuesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Roseman and the Eagles "could be a threat" to land the defensive end, especially if it keeps him away from the Washington Commanders.
And on Friday, The Athletic's Diana Russini added some fuel to the fire.
"Here’s what some people are saying right now. That Howie’s willing to move on from some of these [Eagles free agents] because he’s looking to make a big swing, and take a big swing," said Russini on the Scoop City podcast. "And that big swing would be for Myles Garrett . . . Would you put it past Howie Roseman going after Myles Garrett? No way."
Russini goes on to suggest that a package to land Garrett would not need to include two first-round draft picks.
Billy, this is Myles Garrett. He’s a 4 time first-team All-Pro DE and was the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year. He is a sure fire future Hall of Famer. His only defect is that he doesn’t fucking want to be here anymore. pic.twitter.com/QBlewVGnpm
"Is Cleveland going to move him?" asks Russini rhetorically. "At the end of the day, it’s going to come down to that. And Myles Garrett is not open to negotiating with the Browns on a new contract."
Any team acquiring Garrett would need to sign him to a new, blockbuster long-term deal. Many in the industry believe the compensation to the Browns would involve multiple first-round picks. And, as Russini notes, acquiring Garrett would almost certainly mean that the Birds move on from most (if not all) of their Super Bowl LIX champions who are free agents.
Nothing about a trade this significant would be easy.
But that's exactly why God and/or Science created Howie Roseman.
