Vox Media's union employees will not go on strike after the union announced it reached a three-year agreement with the company:
BREAKING: WGAE members at Vox Media reached a tentative agreement with management on a new three-year collective bargaining agreement! The 250-member unit will vote to ratify the contract in the coming days. As a deal has now been reached, there will not be any pickets. pic.twitter.com/Bgk3HQsBvY
As noted by Variety's Todd Spangler, the union includes editorial staff at SB Nation. That means local websites like Bleeding Green Nation (Eagles), Liberty Ballers (Sixers) and The Good Phight (Phillies) won't have any interruptions of their coverage following the agreement.
A strike seemed likely after 90% of Vox Media's union voted to authorize one if a deal wasn't reached by the end of their current contract, which expired at 11:59 p.m. on June 12. However, the two sides ended up with a compromise:
“Ninety percent of the 250-member bargaining unit voted in favor of the strike authorization. The unit includes editorial staffers at https://t.co/C3TknUshYz, The Verge, Eater, SB Nation, Pop Sugar, Thrillist, Vox Media Podcast Network and The Dodo.” https://t.co/3eqYWndYvm
"About 250" writers and editorial workers are covered in the deal, while being represented by Writers Guild of America East. Union members and representatives from WGAE are set to vote on the contract in the next few days. Assuming the deal passes as expected, the union has promised to release some of the details of the pact that the two sides have come to.
Concerns of union members, per Spangler's reporting, included compensation, AI protections, benefits and assurances for severance and layoff procedures.
