What is the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series about?

Back in 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced that a Harry Potter reboot was in the works. This time, the magical world was being adapted for television.

Given the longer format, the production promises to be a faithful adaptation that will delve further into the details the films had to cut. The series plans to cover one book per season, and production will span 10 years.

Who has been cast in the ‘Harry Potter ' TV series so far?

Casting has been ramping up, with frequent announcements made over the past few months. This includes the casting of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, the three main characters.

More than 30,000 young actors auditioned for the three main leads, and they were finally announced back in May. The three actors playing the leads are Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione.

However, that’s not everyone. As of June 10, 18 characters have been cast in the Harry Potter TV series.

Let’s take a look at the actors cast in the Harry Potter TV series so far:

• Harry Potter - Dominic McLaughlin

• Ron Weasley - Alastair Stout

• Hermione Granger - Arabella Stanton

• Rubeus Hagrid - Nick Frost

• Albus Dumbledore - John Lithgow

• Minerva McGonagall - Janet McTeer

• Severus Snape - Paapa Essiedu

• Molly Weasley - Katherine Parkinson

• Draco Malfoy - Lox Pratt

• Lucius Malfoy - Johnny Flynn

• Petunia Dursley - Bel Powley

• Vernon Dursley - Daniel Rigby

• Quirinus Quirrell - Luke Thallon

• Argus Filch - Paul Whitehouse

• Seamus Finnigan - Leo Earley

• Parvati Patil - Alessia Leoni

• Lavender Brown - Sienna Moosah

• Cornelius Fudge - Bertie Carvel

As of now, none of the cast members from the original films are returning to reprise their roles in the new series. However, that doesn’t rule out potential cameos in the future.

Has the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series started shooting?

No, the Harry Potter TV series is not currently in production. The plan is for the series to start shooting in the summer of 2025. This would explain why there have been so many casting announcements in the last couple of weeks. They are likely gearing up to start filming the series as soon as possible.

Who are the showrunners of the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series?

Francesca Gardiner will be the showrunner and executive producer of the Harry Potter series. Her past credits include being a co-executive producer on Killing Eve, a consulting producer on Succession, and writing for His Dark Materials and The Man in the High Castle. However, the Harry Potter television series will be the first television series for which Gardiner will be the showrunner.

Joining her is her producing colleague from SuccessionMark Mylod, who will also be an executive producer on the series and will direct some of the episodes. In addition to Succession, Mylod has produced Shameless and Entourage. He has also directed episodes of Game of ThronesThe Last of UsShameless, and many other series.

Where can you watch the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series?

The Harry Potter TV series has not been released yet. The project was initially slated for Max as an original series specifically for Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform. However, this changed after the company shifted strategies for its streamer.

“Big-budget tentpole scripted series” will instead be HBO Originals, not Max Originals. This just means that the Harry Potter TV series will first air on HBO before being available on the Max streaming platform.

When will the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series be released?

Not only has the Harry Potter TV series not been released yet, but a release date has also not been announced. While this project is extremely anticipated by fans and the company itself, there are too many moving pieces at this point to determine when the series will be released.

The Harry Potter television series is expected to be released sometime in 2026 or 2027, with a more specific release date forthcoming.

Will J.K. Rowling be involved in the new ‘Harry Potter’ series?

If you’re not familiar, Harry Potter is based on the massively popular book series written by J.K. Rowling. The author has been embroiled in numerous controversies and scandals over the years.

Back in 2020, Rowling publicly shared her views on transgender issues, which many labeled as transphobic. In response, many of the original cast members spoke out in support of the trans community, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

Regardless of the controversy, Rowling is an executive producer on the Harry Potter TV series. Given that she is the creator of the series, Rowling has control over how her original idea is being used.

With filming set to begin this summer and an impressive cast now in place, the Harry Potter TV series is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious television adaptations in recent memory. The anticipation is so high that prediction markets like Kalshi are already allowing traders to speculate on release dates, reflecting just how closely fans and investors are watching every development. Current odds at Kalshi for the series being released before June 2026 are at 65%.
