Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies have struck on a controllable star closer, landing Johan Durán from the Minnesota Twins:
The Philadelphia Phillies are finalizing a deal to acquire closer Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins for two top prospects, sources tell ESPN. The biggest move of the deadline so far is almost complete.
Durán, 27, has a 2.01 ERA in 49 games for the Twins this year, along with 16 saves. He's also under team control through the 2027 season, so the Phillies will have Durán for three pennant races.
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Phillies are sending catcher Eduardo Tait and RHP Mick Abel to the Twins:
The Phillies swap Eduardo Tait and Mick Abel to the Twins for Jhoan Duran.
Considering there were multiple reports earlier in the day that the Twins were holding out for Phillies' No. 1 prospect Andrew Painter, this feels like a relatively light price to pay for the Phillies. Tait has a high ceiling as a catcher, but he's 18 years old and still at Single-A Clearwater. Abel is a former first-round pick that has revived his career in 2025, but the Phillies are a team that's deep in starting rotation depth, both for this season and beyond. Phillies Nation's Ty Daubert ranked Tait the No. 5 prospect in the Phillies' system in his most recent update, and Abel No. 6. For that to be all it took to land Durán, frankly, is shocking.
With this trade, the Phillies have held onto their consensus top-three prospects in Painter, shortstop Aidan Miller and outfielder Justin Crawford. That leaves Dombrowski more room to potentially make another trade. They could also hold onto all three, particularly with the chance that Painter and/or Crawford play a factor for the Phillies down the stretch.
