Bowling Green Head Coach Scot Loeffler during the NCAA college football game between the Tennessee Volunteers and Bowling Green Falcons in Knoxville, Tenn. on Thursday, September 2, 2021...Ut Bowling Green
The Eagles are hiring Bowling Green State University head coach Scot Loeffler to be their new quarterbacks coach, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter:
Scot Loeffler is being named the new quarterbacks coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Loeffler, a former Michigan quarterback, has been the head coach at Bowling Green State University the past six seasons and led them to a bowl game the last three years.
Loeffler replaces Doug Nussmeier, who became the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. He joined the staff of former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, whom the Saints hired to be their head coach after the Eagles won Super Bowl LIX. The Eagles promoted Kevin Patullo from pass game coordinator and associate head coach to offensive coordinator once Moore departed.
As Schefter noted, Loeffler played quarterback at Michigan from 1993-1996, meaning he overlapped on the Wolverines with Tom Brady, who came to the program in 1995. He than began his coaching career working on the Michigan staff, and has since spent the bulk of his time in the collegiate ranks. His lone experience in the NFL to this point came as the quarterbacks coach for the 2008 Detroit Lions under Rod Marinelli. As you probably know, though, that was the first team in NFL history to go 0-16. Loeffler has also had stints on the coaching staffs at Central Michigan, Florida, Temple, Auburn, Virginia Tech and Boston College.
His record as a college head coach (27-41) doesn't jump off the page, although it's probably not particularly relevant considering that he's coming to the Eagles to be the quarterbacks coach. At the same time, it will be interesting to hear what Nick Sirianni and company believe stood out about Loeffler in comparison to other potential candidates.
