Insider believes Eagles 'could be a threat' for Myles Garrett

Could the Eagles improve their chances to repeat as Super Bowl Champions by acquiring a future Hall of Fame pass rusher? One insider says at the very least that the possibility shouldn't be ruled out.

In an appearance on "Get Up!" Tuesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler says that there is some belief in league circles that Howie Roseman and the Eagles could be players for Garrett, particularly if they get the sense that he may otherwise end up with the division-rival Washington Commanders:

To be clear, it would probably be a stretch to call this a report. At the same time, speculation carries a lot more weight when it comes from someone as plugged in as Fowler.

Earlier this month, Garrett requested a trade from the Browns as he approaches his age-29 season:

The Browns selected Garrett with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. In eight years with Cleveland, Garrett has racked up 102 1/2 sacks, while being named a First-Team All-Pro on four occasions and winning the Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. During his tenure, though, wins have been few and far between, and with the franchise currently hamstrung by the Deshaun Watson contract, it's not surprising that the six-time Pro Bowler is finally attempting to tap out.

Fowler did note that the Browns are not yet on board with trading Garrett. Either he or Hall of Famer Joe Thomas would be the greatest player the franchise has had since they re-entered the league in 1999. Surely, the organization envisioned him spending his entire career in Cleveland. But plans change and the guess here is that given the current state of the franchise and the potential for Garrett to really make things ugly, the Browns will ultimately trade Garrett.

Whether or not that's to the Eagles remains to be seen. Fowler mentioned the likelihood of the Eagles losing Josh Sweat in free agency, but re-signing the Super Bowl hero would be a lot cheaper than sending two first-round picks and probably more to the Browns for Garrett, and likely having to sign the superstar pass rusher to a new deal. Obviously, the output from Garrett would be higher, it's just a matter of whether investing that much in a player who probably only has a few peak years left is the best way to build a franchise or not.

But there is a reality that if it's not the Eagles, a team that could prevent them from repeating — be it the Commanders, Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills or someone else — may wind up with Garrett.
