Chip Kelly will work in the NFL in 2025, returning to the top level of the sport for the first time since 2016.
The former Eagles head coach has been hired by the Las Vegas Raiders to be Pete Carroll's offensive coordinator:
Back to the NFL: Former Eagles HC Chip Kelly is being hired as the Raiders offensive coordinator, per me and @PeteThamel.
Kelly spent last season as Ryan Day's offensive coordinator at Ohio State for a Buckeyes team that eventually won the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Now 61, Kelly was the Eagles' head coach from 2013 until his dismissal in December of 2015. Kelly had initial success at the NFL level after taking the college football world by storm as the head coach at the University of Oregon, but an inability to stay ahead of the curve offensively coupled with an ill-fated year with final say over personnel led to Jeffrey Lurie and the Eagles firing him during the final month of a miserable 2015 season. Despite a 26-21 record with the Eagles, there was very little media or fan pushback when Kelly was dismissed. Losing the locker room is something that's thrown around too often in sports, but it's fair to say that happened to Kelly during his final season.
Kelly was hired to be head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, but with a roster in transition, he went 2-14 and was fired after one season. He's since had a stint working at ESPN in 2017 and then returned to college in 2018 as UCLA's head coach. He held that position for six seasons, posting an uninspiring 35-34 and leaving on his own accord to become the OC for Ohio State as the responsibilities of a college head coach changed in the NIL world.
He'll now join Carroll's staff in Las Vegas, inheriting All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers, but not a whole hell of a lot else on a team that minority owner Tom Brady and new general manager John Spytek are trying to overhaul.
