When Tyson Foerster clutched his shoulder on a one-timer against Pittsburgh last month and immediately skated down the tunnel, it was clear that the injury wasn't good.
Now, it's enough to keep him out for the season.
The Flyers announced on Wednesday that Tyson Foerster had undergone surgery on his right arm on Monday and that he would miss five months, practically ending his regular season.
Tyson Foerster appears to be done for the regular season.
From Danny Briere:
After further medical consultation and diagnostic testing… Tyson Foerster underwent successful surgery on his arm on Monday.
Tyson is expected to make a full recovery and will be out five months.
Five months takes the Flyers into May, so even the first round of the playoffs may be in doubt, if the Flyers qualify, but injuries suddenly have a way of healing faster in the NHL when the postseason rolls around, so that possibility remains up in the air.
Still, considering how much Foerster has gone through with various injuries in his young career, the Flyers may prefer that he simply get 100 percent healthy and not try to be a hero and return early just to help in the playoffs if the opportunity arises for the team.
Originally diagnosed as an injury that would keep Foerster out 2-3 months, the recent change is the result of Foerster and the Flyers choosing a surgical option rather than a rehabilitative one.
Foerster had surgery back in 2021 on the same arm when he dislocated his shoulder during a game with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL. That surgery kept him out a little more than four months.
Foerster also had an infection in his elbow that required treatment over the summer after suffering an injury during the World Championships while playing for Team Canada. That was originally expected to keep him out long term, but he recovered faster than many expected and was ready to start the season for the Flyers.

Foerster is arguably the Flyers most important forward in that he's an all situations player, and that he plays a 200-foot game, making him a danger to score offensively while maintaining a defensive reliability and responsibility on the ice.
Foerster, 23, had 10 goals and three assists in 21 games this season before the injury. He also missed three games earlier this season after blocking a shot with his skate, leaving his foot/ankle area too swollen to play for the better part of a week.
The Flyers have tried several players filling in for Foerster in his spot on a line with Noah Cates and Bobby Brink. The most recent was moving Matvei Michkov onto that line Tuesday in Montreal.
Michkov set up Brink for a goal in the Flyers 4-1 win over the Canadiens. The Flyers are currently 17-9-6 and with 40 points sit in third place in the eight-team Metropolitan Division, four points behind first place Carolina and one point behind the second place New York Islanders. The Flyers have two games in hand on the Islanders.
