Following Jalen Hurts' dismal performance Monday night against the Los Angeles Chargers, there was talk – some of it in low murmurs, some of it in emphatic roars – about sitting the quarterback.
It's difficult to wrap one's head around the situation that has unfolded late in the Philadelphia Eagles' season. The reigning Super Bowl MVP looks like a shell of himself and just played the worst game of his career on the national stage. Hurts, who prides himself on his lack of turnovers, generated five on Monday night, including two on the same play.
Just eight months removed from reaching the apex of the football world and lifting the Lombardi Trophy, hot takes flew that perhaps Hurts should sit for a game and get right.
Well, Nick Sirianni put that notion to rest Wednesday morning.
During his weekly appearance on the WIP Morning Show, Sirianni was asked if he would bench Hurts later in the season if the quarterback continued to struggle.
"No, I think that's ridiculous," Sirianni said. "I know every time I go out on that field with Jalen Hurts as our quarterback, we have a chance to win the game. That's something that's been proven. We've won a lot, a lot of football games."

This is true. In his career, Hurts is 54-25 as a starter, good for a 68.4% winning percentage. Excluding 2020 and 2021, that record jumps to 45-15, and that percentage jumps to 75.0%.
Hurts prioritizes winning. He is historically excellent at keeping the main thing the main thing, even if his lack of flashy plays occasionally frustrates both fans and receivers. But the Eagles are now riding a three-game losing streak, and the argument could be made that Hurts hasn't played a consensus "good" game since Week 8 against the New York Giants, way back on Oct. 26. In the five games since, Hurts has thrown four touchdowns to five interceptions, and he's fumbled the ball four times.
Those obviously aren't great numbers. They aren't even good, quite frankly. But are those numbers the sole reason for the Eagles' recent downturn? Sirianni doesn't think so.
"We don't ever go into something and assign (blame.) This is a team game. This is the most ultimate team game," Sirianni said on WIP. "You win together as a team, you lose together as a team. It's never just one thing. I kind of said that last week, or the week before, with Kevin (Patullo), the same deal. I know every time I walk on that field and Jalen Hurts is the starting quarterback, I have so much confidence that we can win every game."
So there you have it. Philadelphia loves a backup quarterback, especially when the QB1 is struggling, but Sirianni will continue to stick by Hurts through his struggles.
Hopefully Hurts can return to his winning ways Sunday against the 2-11 Las Vegas Raiders, because if he can't... all hell will break loose.
