According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Philadelphia Eagles are releasing rookie quarterback Kyle McCord.
The Eagles selected McCord, a St. Joseph's Prep graduate and a South Jersey native, out of Syracuse University in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
In an NFL quarterback room, four is a crowd (unless you're the Cleveland Browns). Obviously Jalen Hurts is the entrenched starter, and Tanner McKee's performance in training camp and the first preseason game solidly penciled him in at QB2.
With QB3 up for grabs, McCord played half the snaps in the second preseason game, and all the snaps in the third game; the assumption was that he had beaten Dorian Thompson-Robinson (who has already been waived) for the third-string quarterback position.
Even so, McCord's preseason performance wasn't exactly inspiring. Across three games, he completed 42.9% of his passes for 191 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
The third preseason game was Friday evening, and the Eagles acquired quarterback Sam Howell from the Minnesota Vikings Sunday morning. That acquisition pushed McCord out of the picture.
McKee is still dealing with a thumb injury that could linger into the regular season, so there's a fair chance the Eagles' QB3 will directly back up Jalen Hurts in week one and possibly beyond. McCord's inconsistent performance likely incentivized the Eagles to pick up Howell, who will be a more reliable backup with NFL experience to boot.
McCord will now go on waivers, and if he clears them, he will become a free agent. If the Eagles still want to develop McCord further, they could potentially keep him in the organization by signing him to the practice squad.
The deadline for the Eagles to trim their roster down to 53 men is Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. This move gets them one man closer to that mark.
