ESPN ranks Eagles coaching staff 8th-best in the NFL

Continuity isn't a way to describe the Eagles' coaching staffs under Nick Sirianni. When you're successful in the NFL, teams are going to look to poach coordinators away to lead their franchises. That's been a common occurrence since Sirianni took over in 2021.

Outside of his first two seasons when Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon were his offensive and defensive coordinators, Sirianni's staffs have changed each year. Kellen Moore was the latest casualty, with the New Orleans Saints hiring him as their head coach in February.

Kevin Patullo has replaced Moore as the Eagles' offensive coordinator, which places him alongside defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, as well as Sirianni.

Recently, ESPN's Ben Solak ranked all the coaching staffs in the NFL and he put the Eagles at No. 8. The Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings were all ranked ahead of the Eagles.

Solak had them at No. 15 last year, but moved them into the top 10 this time around. He called the Eagles "one of most challenging teams to rank," with some of his rationale here:

"Let's start with what we know for sure: Fangio still has the juice, kids. His 2023 season in Miami ended acrimoniously, as some players had choice words for his coaching style following his departure. But the culture fit is far better in Philadelphia, and every player on the Eagles' defense has improved under him — that's not an exaggeration.

"...Fangio, who is inarguably the most influential defensive coordinator of the past decade, is still firmly in the argument for being the best DC doing it today."

Solak's Fangio love is spot on. The 66-year-old took a porous defense that had collapsed under Brian Johnson and turned it into the best in the league. Yes, the additions of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in the secondary helped, as well as the emergence of Zack Baun, but Fangio knew how to get the best out of those guys.

For Patullo, there's some skepticism from Solak (and rightly so). The last time the Eagles hired an offensive coordinator from within the organization, it was Brian Johnson. He was fired after a year. Solak makes this point, but also feels this situation is a little different:

"It's unlikely they crash out again, as offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland keeps the floor quite high, and the presence of Saquon Barkley, this time around is a difference-maker. But this system is not as plug-and-chug as others in the league."

When it comes to Sirianni, he's in a much better position than he was a year ago. The Eagles collapsed down the stretch in 2023, which even put Sirianni's job in jeopardy. He seems to have much better control over the locker room (winning a Super Bowl will help with that) and his job is safe for now.

Solak called Sirianni "one of the best in-game decision makers in football" and applauded his use of the tush-push and aggressiveness on fourth down.

Sirianni improved his image a ton last year, however, Solak does note anything can happen with coaches:

"But winds change fast in the NFL — Sirianni should know better than anyone. It's hard to have unflapping confidence in Sirianni's position as the tip of the spear.

"Very tough team to rank. I would not fault a ranking with the Eagles in the top five — or outside the top 10."

Sirianni can be a polarizing figure and he's not everyone's cup of tea. But no matter what people's views of Sirianni are, the Eagles are in a way better spot than some of their NFC East counterparts.

Solak has the New York Giants as the worst coaching staffs in the NFL, while the Dallas Cowboys are 29th. The Washington Commanders are a lot better off at No. 13.

Daboll is potentially a lame-duck coach for the Giants, while the Cowboys hired Brian Schottenheimer out of the blue, despite him being on former head coach Mike McCarthy's staff.

Sirianni's coaches, meanwhile, are rising up the ranks, rather than replacing him. There might not be a ton of consistency year to year, but the quality usually remains.
