Ranger Suárez (low back stiffness) will make his season debut Sunday afternoon against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Rob Thomson announced after the Phillies defeated the Washington Nationals 7-2 this evening.
Taijuan Walker was already slated to get the ball for the Phillies in Thursday's series finale. The Phillies will then go with Jesús Luzardo, Aaron Nola and Suárez this weekend against the Snakes.
Phillies rotation order vs. 🐍: Jesús Luzardo, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suárez
Suárez has been with the Phillies during the early days of this homestand after making four rehab appearances between Single-A Clearwater and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Suárez posted a 1.08 ERA with 24 strikeouts over 16 2/3 innings. The lefty threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.
Getting back a healthy Suárez would be a massive addition for the Phillies, given that he was an All-Star a year ago and while he's going to begin his season in the starting rotation, he has bullpen experience that could prove valuable later in the campaign.
With that said, Suárez has now landed on the injured list with back-related ailments in three of the last four seasons. He also posted a 5.65 ERA across eight second-half starts last year after a strong start to the season earned him his first All-Star Game selection.
Durability has been a concern with the 29-year-old, and it may ultimately hamper his free-agent market this upcoming offseason. In the meantime, though, he could prove to be a major addition for a club that already has one of the best starting rotations in baseball.
