Phillies Clinch Third Consecutive Postseason Appearance With Win Over Mets

"Fuck yeah, Bohmer!" was the message that Trea Turner had to Alec Bohm as he greeted him and Bryce Harper at home plate after a three-run homer that was the big blow in a six-run fourth inning for the Phillies.

As it turned out, the six-run fourth inning gave the Phillies a lead they would never relinquish in a victory over the New York Mets that allowed the club to clinch a playoff berth. The Phillies pounded out 17 hits in a 12-2 win over the Mets.

It marks the third consecutive season in which the Phillies have reached the postseason. This comes after a streak of nine consecutive years without making the playoffs for the organization from 2012-2021.

Obviously, the Phillies have two bigger goals remaining in the regular season.

1. Their magic number to win the NL East is now down to two, meaning if they win one of the two remaining games against the Mets this weekend, the Phillies will wrap up their first division title since 2011.

2. They entered the night tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the No. 1 seed in the NL playoffs. The top two spots come with a first-round bye, and the team with the most wins will have home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs. They own the tiebreaker over the Dodgers, but you would prefer not to leave it up to something like that.

Of course, there's only one real goal for the Phillies in 2024. Whether or not you want to call it World-Series-or-bust, anything short of a parade will likely be seen as disappointing considering how close the Phillies have gotten the last two years.

But before you can win a World Series, you have to qualify for the postseason. The Phillies took that all-important first step Friday at Citi Field.
