After close to a week of saying they thought Alec Bohm could avoid a stint on the injured list, the Phillies announced Friday that the All-Star third baseman has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hand strain.
The move is retroactive to Sept. 3, because the maximum you can backdate an IL placement is three days.
Bohm suffered the injury during a first-inning at-bat against the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 29. While he initially remained in the game defensively at third base, Bohm came out before his next at-bat. X-rays taken that night were negative.

The Phillies played a man down for their past six games, believing Bohm would be back quicker that way than if he had to spend a minimum number of days on the IL. Ultimately, that didn't prove to be the case.
Though it's suboptimal to be without Bohm for a period given that he leads baseball with 44 doubles, the Phillies have managed in recent days to get by with Edmundo Sosa, Weston Wilson and Kody Clemens seeing time at third base.
In Bohm's absence, the Phillies have recalled infielder Buddy Kennedy from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Kennedy spent a couple days on the Phillies active roster last month when Wilson was on paternity leave, but didn't ultimately appear in a game. Perhaps the second time around the Millville, New Jersey native will get an opportunity to make an appearance with the team he grew up rooting for.
