Bryce Harper departed Wednesday afternoon's Phillies 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays with what the team called a left elbow contusion after getting hit by a pitch from Bowden Francis in the top of the first inning.

Fortunately for the Phillies, Harper appears to be alright.

"He's fine," Rob Thomson told MLB.com's Todd Zolecki after the game.

Harper initially remained in the game after being hit. However, Edmundo Sosa pinch hit for him in the top of the third inning, coming in to play third base and pushing Kody Clemens over to first base. That seems to have been Thomson and the Phillies being cautious more than anything.

"Well, it was stiffening up, so it was more of a precaution," Thomson said. "I think he could have continued on if we really had to."

While Harper recently acknowledged in a conversation with Zolecki that he's been playing through some elbow and wrist inflammation, that's on his right arm.

Harper hasn't homered since Aug. 9, but there's been no indication to this point that the Phillies plan to place him on the injured list. Thomson was asked if Harper getting hit today will change his approach with the two-time NL MVP.

"Well, I'll talk to him tomorrow about it," Thomson said. "And see if he needs a day, or two days — whatever it takes, just to make sure he's OK to play."
